The morale of some People Living With HIV/AIDS (PLWHAs) to share their life stories with others went low as invited guests to the awareness creation programme they organized failed to turn up. The PLWHAs have formed an association, the “Bread of Life and Deliverance Association” with the aim of being ambassadors of the pandemic who wanted to use the occasion to educate residents of Tema Manhean on the disease. The dejected victims some of them couples had no choice than to go to people’s houses to persuade them to attend the programme after waiting over three hours but this did not yield the desired results as a few people showed up. The programme which was supposed to start at 1000 hours began at 1300 hours due to the failure of invited churches, clan houses, market women, dressmakers associations, drivers and many others, to honour the invitation. Apostle Matel Gracia, founder of the Association told the Ghana News Agency (GNA) that in order to prevent stigmatization of PLWHAs, individuals with the virus must first accept their situation. Apostle Gracia explained that people discriminate and stigmatized HIV victims because some PLWHAs became dejected in their lives after testing HIV positive thereby creating the opportunity for others to despise them. He said instead of seeking counsel on how to manage the virus, people rather allow fear to grip them leading to the death of many HIV victims earlier than expected. The founder of the association called on the public to desist from making public statements that sought to condemn the HIV infected persons as its mode of infection goes beyond sex, making everybody a prospective victim. “For as long as the community subjects the PLWHAs to ridicule and abject discrimination, they would either keep their status secret or withdraw from the society,” Apostle Gracia stated. He further said the association believed that it was the conduct of society that kills people living with HIV and not the virus as he explained that some PLWHAs kept their status secret and spread the disease silently as a revenge on society for discriminating against them.
