Ghana Library Authority (GhLA) has outdoored a library management manual as part of its efforts to instil a reading culture among young people in the country.
Giving a background to the manual, Hayford Siaw, the Acting Executive Director of the Authority, said school libraries should be developed as an integral part of the nation’s education agenda to instil a culture of reading.
This was part of the recommendations after a research conducted by the Education Ministry, British Council and Ghana Library Authority during Prime Minister Busia’s era on why Ghanaians are not reading.
“Unfortunately, the nation has paid lip service to this, but an opportunity has presented itself through the instrumentality of the Education Minister for the country to be restored to days of quality education through an efficient library system,’’ Mr Siaw said.
The launch was done on the sidelines of the ongoing training programme of Senior High School (SHS) Librarians in Ashanti Region.
It is part of the series of efforts by the Ghana Library Authority to equip school library managers to effectively manage the facility and the resources entrusted in their care for the benefit of both teachers and students.
The Board Chairperson of the Ghana Library Authority Board, Dr Helena R. Asamoah-Hassan performed the launch of the manual.
She encouraged stakeholders to make use of it as the country systematically work together to improve a culture of reading and lifelong learning in the country.
