The Deputy Energy Minister in charge of Petroleum has debunked rumours that the implementation of the Cylinder Recirculation Model (CRM) policy will create unemployment.
Dr Mohammed Amin Adam assured industry players that the Akufo-Addo government “will be the last to kick people out of their jobs when it is creating jobs.”
Speaking at the National Petroleum Authority (NPA) stakeholder meeting in the Tamale metropolis Wednesday, he appealed to consumers of LPG products to support the policy to address some of the issues of petroleum fires.
He acknowledged that the policy is not entirely new, since it has been done some years ago, and that is why Ghanaians must embrace it, despite the fears being expressed by a section of the public.
The Cylinder Recirculation Module (CRM) is being introduced by the Authority, the statutory agency regulating and monitoring the petroleum downstream in Ghana.
The module which is intended to allow consumers to buy already filled cylinder with LPG at some designated gas stations allocated by NPA.
But government has been warned to rescind its decision of introducing CRM to operators of LPG in the country.
An NGO, Private Investor Protection Agency (PIPA), which seeks the welfare of private investors in the country recently warned that the move will further increase unemployment.
“The CRM will weaken the LPG business in Ghana”, PIPA observed in a statement signed by its Executive Secretary, Kwamena Backman.
But the Deputy Energy Minister in charge of Petroleum said NPA is well-positioned to carry out the policy.
Dr Amin Adam acknowledged the positive contributions from stakeholders and customers at NPA such sensitisation forums.
On his part, the CEO of the NPA, Hassan Tampuli, reiterated his outfit’s commitment to continue soliciting the views of consumers and other stakeholders across the country, before the policy is fully implemented.
The Northern Regional Minister Salifu Saeed admonished the residents to embrace the policy since it will help address the health challenges associated with the use of wood in the region.
Gabriel Kumi of the LPG Marketers Association who indicated his outfit preparedness to work with the Authority appealed to government to have a look at the tax components on LPG products.
He believes this will help open up the market and boost consumption.
The Authority is expected to undertake a pilot exercise in Obuasi, Kweibibirem and Kade in the Eastern region before the program is rolled out across the country
So far, consumers in the Greater Accra, Ashanti, Western, Upper East and Central regions have had their turn with NPA.
