The Teachers and Educational Workers Union (TEWU) has rejected the imposition of an insurance policy by the State Insurance Company (SIC) and Ghana Education Service (GES).
The move according to the Union, is as a result of the decision by individual members to sign on to personal insurance policies in the country.
Members of the Union say they will no longer tolerate the imposition of the GES-SIC Insurance policy, which the management of the GES is still forcing on them.
In an interview with Joy Business, acting General Secretary of TEWU, Mark Dankyira Koranchie, warned that members will embark on an industrial action if the continuous deductions from their salary are not stopped.
“Individuals who think that the policy is good for them should have been given the opportunity to pick a form and fill it to subscribe to it. These wholesale deductions in the name of the GES-SIC must stop in order to maintain industrial harmony,” he said.
Another issue of concern to the Union is the exclusion of some categories of TEWU members from enjoying the Critical Support Premium.
“There has been a long-standing debate between TEWU and GES management, regarding the eight classes of our membership who are not enjoying the Critical Support Premium which pre-supposes that maybe their work is not necessary.
“We believe everybody's work is important in the education sector in general, therefore, we are calling on government and the GES to take steps to ensure that every member enjoys the Critical Support just as it has been done for civil servants,” Mr Koranchie stated.
