The Minority in Ghana’s Parliament has kicked against new taxes contained in the government’s 2019 Mid- Year Budget Review.
Addressing the press a day after the Minister for Finance and Economic Planning, Ken Ofori-Atta informed Parliament of increases in energy sector levies, the Minority said the decision will plunge Ghana into poverty and hardship.
“These measures will send shock waves through many households and businesses as this will only further compound the excruciating hardships Ghanaians are already going through,” Minority Spokesperson on Finance Ato Forson said at a press conference Tuesday.
If Parliament approves the budget review, the prices of Diesel and petrol will go up by GHp 20 per litre while that of liquified petroleum gas will go up by GHp 8 per kg.
The Minority has vowed to resist these increments if the government fails to heed to their call.
