The only girls’ school remaining in the National Science and Maths Quiz 2019; Wesley Girls SHS, will Friday afternoon fight for a spot at the semifinal.
This is significant because no girls school has ever won the competition in its 26 years and besides co-ed, Achimota School; only boys’ schools have won the ultimate prize.
Wesley Girls’ SHS came close in 1999 when they made it to the final. They, however, lost to Mfantsipim School and finished as first runners up.
Friday afternoon, they have a chance to keep the hope alive of breaking the jinx when they face four-time champions, Prempeh College and Two-time champions Achimota School at the quarterfinal.
The girls, however, have a tough task to complete as the last time Prempeh College lost before the semifinal was in 2016 to two-time champions Mfantsipim School.
Achimota School is also tipped to go far in the competition as they defeated one-time winner, St Thomas Aquinas SHS who were favourites to make the quarterfinal.
Achimota School also won the maiden Greater Accra Regional Championship earlier in 2019.
The contest takes place at the R.S. Amegashie auditorium at the University of Ghana Business School.
It will be live on Joy FM, JoyNews and Joy Prime on MultiTV and Myjoyonline.com.
