Ghana have been named amongst the top seeds for the African Nations Championship (CHAN) draw set for September 18 in Cairo, Egypt.
According to information pieced together by GNA Sports, the local Black Stars have been seeded alongside hosts South Africa, DR Congo and Zimbabwe ahead of Wednesday’s draw for the championship.
The decision for the seeding was hinged on the performance of teams during the two previous editions of the tournament.
Ghana, DR Congo and Zimbabwe remained the only teams to have played at every edition of the championship since its inception in 2009.
According to the source, South Africa will be in Group A, DR Congo in Group B with Ghana and Zimbabwe in Groups C and D respectively.
According to procedure for the draw put together by the Confederation of African Football (CAF), Group A and B will be based in Cape Town while Group C in Bloemfontein and Group D in Polokwane.
Pot 2 is expected to contain Gabon, Mali, Libya and Uganda. Burkina Faso, Burundi, Ethiopia and Nigeria are also grouped in Pot 3. Congo, Mauritania, Morocco and Mozambique complete Pot 4.
CHAN is a Confederation of Africa Football (CAF) initiative for locally based players biannually.
Ghana were silver medalist in the maiden edition.
The competition slated for South Africa spans January 11- February 1.
