Three Ghanaian students and a Nigerian have been arrested for allegedly withdrawing thousands of Ghana cedis from the accounts of some military officers on pension.
The four, whose names have been withheld for security reasons, allegedly connived with some officials of the Controller and Accountant-General’s Department (CAGD) and succeeded in withdrawing GHC 5,000 being the monthly pension of some retired military officers.
The three students, who succeeded in withdrawing more than GHC50,000 over the period, were arrested last Wednesday when they attempted to pick up a cheque book at the Dansoman branch of the Ghana Commercial Bank (GCB).
According to the source, the Nigerian, who is the leader of the group, connived with some officials at the CAGD to get some names of pensioners on the military payroll.
It said for obvious reasons, the Nigerian recruited the three Ghanaian students who used an ATM card to withdraw the money and received their share.
The source said after withdrawing the money with the ATM card for some time, the students realised that the Nigerian, who was always in possession of the ATM card, had been giving them a raw deal and so they also decided to cheat him.
Their plan was to go in for a cheque book which would enable them to withdraw money at the counter.
But when they made the request, the manager of the Dansoman branch of the GCB became alarmed when she could not reconcile the ages of the students with that of a pensioner and invited them for questioning and their subsequent arrest.
The students then mentioned the name of the Nigerian and he was also arrested.
The Dansoman Police were tight-lipped over the issue when the Daily Graphic called Monday, but the Daily Graphic sighted a lawyer making efforts to secure bail for the suspects.
The suspects will appear before court on Tuesday September 17.
