National Coordinator in charge of Port Health, Dr Dennis Laryea, has urged persons arriving in Ghana from abroad to quarantine themselves even after testing negative for the Novel Corona Virus Infection (COVID-19) at the various points of entry.
Dr Laryea believes this will complement the efforts by health authorities to check the potential spread of the virus in Ghana.
According to him, the call by a section of the public for the government to start isolating people entering the country is laudable, however, individuals can quarantine themselves to prevent the spread of the disease.
Experts say the incubation period for COVID-19 ranges from 1-14 days, most commonly around five days.
Ghana has not recorded a case of coronavirus infection.
Dr Laryea made the call on Adom FM’s Burning Issues on Monday, March 2, 2020.
He explained that it is the responsibility of every Ghanaian to ensure that even if one person has the disease in the country, it would not spread to others.
The public health expert also told host of the show, Akua Boakyewaa Yiadom, that countries that have quarantined persons infected with the virus- the United States of America and the United Kingdom – have been careful to isolate only persons who have been evacuated from high-risk areas.
He suggests that Ghana is likely to do the same if the time comes.
So far, there have been 30 suspected cases in Ghana, according to the Head of Port Health, which have all tested negative.
He further debunked the death a Ghanaian in the Ashanti Region which has been attributed to the disease.
