Zion College, Anloga last Saturday, celebrated 97 deserving students and some teaching and non-teaching staff at the school’s 82nd speech and prize giving day.
In a well-attended ceremony, the headmaster of the school, Innocent August, appealed to the traditional leaders in the area to help the school solve land litigation with some residents.
According to August, it has become very difficult to do any expansion work on the school because of the encroachment by town folk which has been a major problem for years.
"Now the school cannot do any expansion work or even fence the entire school due to the encroachment” the headmaster lamented.
He emphasised that helping to solve the litigation problem is very important to the school.
He also lamented the deplorable state of the campus roads and the boys’ dormitory which is “nothing to write home about” and appealed for urgent attention.
Mr. August also said the school is in dire need of a sick bay to take care of the health needs of both students and teachers.
He commended the old students, staff and the Board of Directors for their continuous help towards the betterment of the school.
The guest speaker, Dean of University of Ghana School of Law, Prof Kofi Quashigah speaking on the theme "Supporting The Success of The Free Senior High School in Zion, The Role of Stakeholders" said, formal education helps to transform families on the fringes of society into prosperous families as well as bonds families into life-long relationships.
"Indeed it bonds even stronger and more lasting than our biological families,” Prof Kofi Quashigah noted.
According to him, education must contribute towards the total molding of the individual into a worthy member of the nation in both character and functionality.
"It is general knowledge that we have problems with the role that education is playing in these respects and that there is the need for stakeholders to take a critical look at our educational system," he said.
Prof Quashigah said Zion needs to interrogate how students can have the capacity to compete in an already overstretched and competitive environment.
He, however, commended government for running successful free SHS despite few challenges.
He urged students of Zion College to be “serious with their studies.”
Zion College which was established 82 years ago by late Rev F.K Fiawo, has been noted for high-level education excellence and discipline.
Zion College has qualified for the National Science and Maths Quiz to be held in Accra come June.
The school, however, lacks infrastructure and many other things.
The science lab and computer lab are not well equipped making it very difficult for smooth teaching and learning.
A total number of 97 students boys 60 and girls 37 were awarded for their hard work.
