The Old Tafo Municipal Assembly says police have intensified patrols at Pankrono Estate in Kumasi, following reports of increased armed robbery in the area.
Residents say they have been forced into self-imposed curfew due to an upsurge in robbery, after a 52–year old man, James Mensah, was stabbed to death two months ago.
James Mensah, also known as Efo, was stabbed to death by armed men in one of the robbery attacks in March, this year.
Other residents have also lost money and other property in a similar attack.
In the latest incident last week, a resident’s car was snatched from him.
Municipal Chief Executive, Fred Obeng Owusu, told Nhyira FM the surveillance will cover day and night to ward off criminals.
"They [police] used to come there in the morning, afternoon and the evening. They patrol during morning, afternoon and the evening," Mr. Obeng said.
Fred Obeng who is also the Chairman of Municipal Security Committee, said the Assembly is concerned by the development and is taking steps to address it.
"We've met as MUSEC [Municipal Security Council] discussing this particular issue so the police personnel who are in the divisional and then the district [commands] are handling this particular problem which has emanated from exactly where you've mentioned (Pankrono Estate). We are even trying to make sure that they do investigations and then perpetrators, criminals, the robbers would be brought to book.”
He assured residents of adequate protection with the police patrols and other measures.
"They need not to live in fear. Policemen and women are on the ground working for them. They have to be patient. I know they can deliver and they are doing the work as expected," he said.
