The diplomatic maneuvers of a chief and officials of the Ashanti Regional Health Administration have compelled striking workers of the National Buruli Ulcer Centre to suspend their action at least for a week.
Workers, including medical personnel at the Catholic Hospital at Agroyesum in the Amansie West District began a sit down strike on Thursday to protest what they say is mismanagement of the hospital and its resources.
They are demanding the immediate removal of the Hospital Administrator and the Matron to save the facility from collapse.
Journalist Saeed Ali Yaqub of Kumasi-based Luv FM, told Joy News that hours after the red band clad workers began their action, the chief, Nana Opia Mensah II arrived and together with officials of the Regional Health Directorate who were monitoring a national immunization exercise, managed to convince the workers to rescind their decision, at least for the time being.
The intervention brought relief to the many healthcare seekers who were stranded at t he facility, and it also prevented an imminent clash between sections of the workers who supported the action and others who also supported the two embattled staff.
The police are said to be investigating an assault case on one of those who supported the strike by those who opposed it.
Nana Mensah promised to forward the workers’ grievances to the appropriate quarters for redress within one week.
They aggrieved workers accused the Administrator of employing incompetent cronies to replace workers he had sacked for no apparent reason. They also claimed to have forwarded their grievances to the Diocesan office at Obuasi, but the leadership had failed to respond.
