Rights advocate defends abuses report

The Africa Co-coordinator of the Commonwealth Human Rights Initiative (CHRI), Nana Oye Lithur has described as unfounded accusations leveled against her by some residents of Nkwanta in the Volta region over a report on human rights abuses in the district. The Nkwanta residents have challenged conclusions in a CHRI report dismissing allegations of human rights abuses meted out to some residents of Shiare in the Nkwanta District and accused Nana Oye Lithur of bias in her investigations. They told Joy News correspondents that they had expected an objective report which would have addressed the issue of the deaths of two men in the community, and that the investigators should have spoken to the families of the two victims. But in an interview with Joy News, Nana Oye ruled out bias in the CHRI report. She also dismissed claims by the residents that she had promised to get compensation for the victims of the human rights infractions. Nana Oye said the visit by her organization to Shiare was solely to investigate reports of human rights abuses brought up by the residents. In the course of their investigations, the team spoke at length with officials of the Wild Life Department, the Police, the DCE and the staff of the Judicial Service who would be in a position to register any such abuses. She said while the investigations probed specific allegations, none of the institutions acknowledged the existence of any human rights abuses in the community.
