The management of Golden Star Bogoso/Prestea Limited (GSBPL) has organised a day's workshop on Sodium Cyanide management and emergency response for chiefs, elders, opinion leaders and assembly members drawn from communities along cyanide transport route at Petepom near Bogoso in the Western Region.
It was to illustrate properties of cyanide, its usage and management of risk at the mine site, responsibilities and commitment of communities during an emergency occurrence of cyanide spillage on site and in the communities.
Miss Beatrice Tetteh, Safety, Training and Induction Coordinator of GSBPL, said the use of cyanide for gold extraction was discovered about 350 years ago.
She said the chemical was manufactured in Australia and remained the most efficient method for gold extraction.
Mr Charles Fameyeh, Medical Assistant of Bogoso Health Centre, called for an intensive education on cyanide management to create awareness about the chemical.
