The 3Music year under review was truly a year for music. Songs flowed from the camps of new acts like La Meme Gang, Cina Soul to Kuami Eugene and many others.
To be able to crown the ‘Song of the Year’ the board of 3Music Awards looked at the most outstanding and dominant song of the year on the basis of lyrical power, superior songwriting and outstanding productions.
Still, a tough one, because the music industry saw the power of KiDi, Kuami Eugene, King Promise, Kwesi Arthur and others when it came to producing a song, writing of lyrics and singing them with all the passion they could muster.
Add the likes of Stonebwoy, Sarkodie, Shatta Wale and Mugeez then we are entering a whole new dimension.
Song of the Year is one of the topmost awards for 3music hence the award does not only go to the act/group whose voices are heard on the song but recognises the songwriter, producer, sound engineer and mixer of the song.
Here are the nominations for the Song of the Year:
‘Obi Nyani Me;
This song is by Patience Nyarko featuring Bro Sammy. It is the lead song on Patience Nyarko’s ‘Obi Nyanime’ album.
Released on February 20, 2018, this song has earned it 4.4 million views on YouTube alone. It was produced by BeatBoss Tims.
‘Killing Me Softly’
This is one of the songs that showed singer Adina’s growth after the release of her hit single ‘Too Late’ that got her so many fans and admirers.
She featured Lynx Entertainment’s Kuami Eugene on this beat produced by TeddyMadeIt. The song after the release of the video on March 16, 2018, has 6.1 million views on YouTube alone.
‘Wish Me Well’
In June 2018, Kuami Eugene released the song that has gone on to be one of his most popular songs if not the only. Be it the lyrics or the beat, people could resonate with it.
He also co-produced the song with Willisbeatz. Talk about talent!
The video has 9.9 million views on YouTube and it is just a few clicks away from 10million.
‘My Level’
When people saw Shatta Wale floating in the sky and holding on to balloons, they were so shocked.
One, because they were shocked he left his militants on the ground to be in the sky by himself and two because no one expected him to take the ‘my level’ anthem so literally.
It is and still is one of the most played songs on the radio today. The video after the release on December 8, has 4.4 million views on YouTube.
‘CCTV’
For those who believe in God, they call Him the Omnipresent God. He sees all.
To show appreciation to the God who has and still sees him through everything, watches over him all the time, King Promised served Ghanaians with his hit single CCTV.
Featuring Mugeez of R2Bees and Sarkodie, the video has about 5.6 million views on YouTube. The award-winning beatmaker KillBeatz produced this one.
‘Woara’
From ‘Grind day’ to ‘Anthem’, rapper Kwesi Arthur released ‘Woara’ and similar to the theme of ‘CCTV’. People were beginning to follow him more and fell in love with his simplicity, genuineness and honesty after this song came out. Many fans have made covers of the songs and choirs have added their own touch to it as well.
‘Can’t Let You Go’
Some fans were angry at Sarkodie because his wedding was so exclusive of the venue and date was known to the few showbiz people he invited. However, the anger seems to slip away after ‘Can’t Let You Go’ came out. The track was produced by Blaqjerzee
He treated fans with excerpts from his wedding and served them with the hot single that celebrated his love for his wife Tracy. Young or old, this song seems to get everybody the moment it starts playing. Sarkodie featured King Promise in the single that amassed 6.9 million views on YouTube alone and still counting.
‘Obia Wone Master’
People thought Yaa Pono wrote this as a diss song. Diss song or not, this song has some truth to it. ‘Obia Wone Master’ translated as everyone has a master, this song caught the attention of many because they could relate to it.
Yaa Pono featured Stonebwoy on this track 2.1 million views on Youtube and produced by KC Beat.
‘Adiepena’
This track was different from the ‘Adiepena’ people knew from the Kojo Antwi but was nothing short of amazing.
KiDi displayed his songwriting skills when he laced the beat with such beautiful lyrics. In an interview in 2018, the Lynx entertainment signee revealed the song was from his personal experience. Hence it is not shocking to see him pour his emotions out with the lyrics.
The song was produced by Dat BeatGod and has 5.3 million views on YouTube.
‘Bawasaaba’
Some artistes speak one language but others especially Africans, have the chance to learn more than just one. Stonevbwoy is one of the artistes to do just that with his music. The title of this song is in Hausa, a shift from his English and Twi titles.
The video has about 3.7 million views on YouTube and was produced by ‘Almighty' StreetBeatz.
