The Ghana Trades Union Congress (GTUC) is to host the founding congress of the International Trade Union Confederation (ITUC-AFRICA), an African Regional Organisation in Accra from November 27 to 29, 2007.
A statement issued by Kwasi Adu-Amankwah, Secretary-General of the GTUC in Accra on Sunday said the congress would bring together three hundred trade union leaders from Africa and guests from the international trade union community to Accra.
It said the highlight of the congress would be the merger of the International Confederation of Free Trade Unions (ICFTU-AFRO) and the Democratic Organisation of African Workers Trade Union (DOAWTU) into the ITUC-AFRICA.
The congress would be preceded by the dissolution of the ICFTU-AFRO and the DOAWTU on November 26, 2007 in Accra.
The ICFTU-AFRO is a regional trade union organisation that was established by national trade union organisations across Africa in January, 1957 in Accra for the purpose of championing the cause of African workers by advocating for improved conditions of labour through the promotion and defence of the rights of working men and women.
The DOAWTU, which brings together trade unions from various African countries, was also created on February 26, 1993 in Porto Novo, Benin, with an agenda to promote and defend the rights and interest of African workers.
President John Agyekum Kufuor would open the forum.
