The Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH), in collaboration with the Women’s Wing of the Ghana Society of the Physically Disabled (GSPD) on Saturday organized a free breast cancer clinical screening for 50 physically-challenged women in Kumasi.
The three-hour exercise formed part of activities
by the KATH in screening the beneficiaries and to
educate them on the need for them to adopt healthy lifestyles for the improvement of their health.
In an interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA)
in Kumasi after the exercise, Dr. Baffour Awuah, Head
of the Oncology Department of the Hospital, said the beneficiaries were from the various districts in the Ashanti Region.
He said the disease whose cause was yet to be identified was deadly and therefore called on women to strive to go for regular medical check-ups for early detection and subsequent treatment.
Dr. Awuah disclosed that the World Health Organization (WHO) has estimated that, 2.5 million out
of the 10 million people diagnosed with the disease die annually.
He cautioned women against junk and canned foods whose effects could lead them in contracting the disease.
Dr. Awuah told the GNA that none of those screened was diagnosed to have contracted the disease and said there was the need for the beneficiaries to adhere to self-examination practices of their breasts.
Mr. Yaw Atakora, National Vice-President (GSPD), appealed to the government to include treatment of breast cancer in the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS).
Miss Margaret Mensah, Regional Chairperson of the Women’s Wing of the (GSPD), called on her colleagues to commit resources to fighting breast cancer to help reduce its prevalence in the country.
