Armed robbers have attacked a driver of the Ghana Embassy in Lome and taken away a Land Cruiser Prado vehicle belonging to the embassy at gunpoint.
Ahmed Mohammed, Charge d'Affaires of the Embassy, confirmed the story in Lome last Thursday and said the Lome Central Police were investigating the armed robbery. Embassy officials said the driver of the vehicle, Emmanuel Bediako, was on his way back to the Ghana Embassy buildings near the Lome Teaching Hospital at Tokoin after dropping some members of staff when the armed robbers suddenly appeared from the dark around a residential area called Kodomey.
Armed to the teeth with assault weapons, they forced the car to stop and pulled the driver out of it. They then took away his mobile phone and made away with the vehicle, leaving the driver completely stranded.
The Lome Central Police confirmed the robbery incident, which has thrown the entire Embassy staff into regrettable distress.
When a reporter of the Daily Graphic visited the Embassy Tuesday, Bediako, also known as "Inspector", was in tears, as Mr. Kwabena Mensa-Bonsu, the Ambassador, was holding a crisis meeting to discuss the robbery.
