Mr. Kwasi Danso-Acheampong, Deputy Chairperson of the National Labour Commission (NLC), on Thursday urged management and workers to work as a team with a common goal in order to survive in the global economy.
He said "For the sake of economic growth and development and the survival of enterprises, it is important for management and workers to explore productive and practical ways of settling industrial disputes."
Mr. Danso-Acheampong was speaking at the opening of a two-day workshop organized by the Commission on; "Unionization, the dispute settlement procedures and the legislative instruments under the Labour Act," for 60 stakeholders in the industry.
He noted that agitations were unavoidable in all human endeavours and said there was the need for people involved in disputes to agree as partners to resolve them to avoid grave economic problems.
Mr. Danso-Acheampong urged management and workers to employ dialogue at the enterprise level in the resolution of disputes.
He also urged them to use the Dispute Settlement Procedures established under Act 651 for unresolved agitations to prevent frequent industrial actions.
Mr. Danso-Acheampong observed that labour-management cooperation was making great strides in improving workplace relations in the advanced industrial economies.
He appealed to stakeholders to collaborate efforts so that the country could compete and survive in the increasingly difficult and ever-changing global market.
Mr. Kofi Baku, a Legal Consultant, underscored the need for a new Labour Act that would create a harmonious industrial relationship for increased productivity, profitability and enhance job creation.
Topics to be discussed include International Organization and International Labour Standards, Unionization and Certification and the Laws of Ghana and Essential Service Classification among others.
