A security analyst has criticized President Kufuor’s security details over their handling of Wednesday morning’s car accident involving the president’s convoy.
Speaking to Joy News, Mr. Emmanuel Bombandey of the West Africa Network for Peace Building said it was most unprofessional for them to allow onlookers to rescue the president from his smashed car.
According to eyewitnesses on the scene of the accident which occurred when the president was on his way to work, bystanders were the first to get to the president after the Mercedes Benz car he was being driven in was hit by another Mercedes Benz car at the Opeibea House intersection.
The President’s car was reported to have rolled over a number of times before it was stopped by a VW Golf car.
Mr. Bombandey said the manner in which the accident was handled fell short of best practices.
He said the president’s security should have secured the perimeter in which the president’s vehicle was to prevent the president from any contact with outsiders, a situation which in itself could have other security implications.
He also thinks the president’s security should be reviewed in the light of Wednesday’s accident.
He raised concern about the speed of the president’s convoy. He is of the view that the speed at which the convoy travels on a highway should not be the same as the speed at which they drive in the centre of Accra.
The president escaped unhurt.
Meanwhile , Mrs. Oboshie Sai-Cofie, Minister of Information says investigations have been launched to look into Wednesday’s accident.
She told Joy News that the driver of the car which rammed into the president’s car is under protective custody at the 37 Military Hospital in Accra, where he is receiving treatment.
She said, he is being taken care of to make sure he is safe because he is considered key in the investigations.
She also said the mechanics of the vehicles involved will be investigated as well as the individuals.
