The Atwima-Mponua district branch of People with Disabilities Association last Sunday received 17 wheelchairs to be distributed to its members during a ceremony at Nyinahin in the Ashanti region.
The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and the Adikanfo Progressive Foundation (ADF), a Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO) presented the wheelchairs worth GH¢2,000 (20 million cedis).
The church gave 12 wheelchairs while ADF presented five.
Speaking at the ceremony, which coincided with the inauguration of the association, Mr Wilberforce Owusu-Ansah, District Chief Executive said the assembly had allocated two per cent of its common fund to the association to support its activities.
The DCE advised the beneficiaries of the wheelchairs to use it purposefully instead of using it for begging.
He thanked the donors and appealed to other NGOs and churches to assist the disabled to enhance their movements.
Mr Osei Twumasi, Ashanti Regional Director of the Department of Social Welfare, appealed to people with disabilities to be law-abiding and respect the authorities.
He advised them to pass their grievances through the district branch of the Social Welfare Department for solutions.
