GLOBACO combats soccer hooliganism

Globacom, one of Africa’s leading telecommunication companies has pledged to end soccer hooliganism on the continent, making the great sports of soccer a means of uniting and entertaining the people of Africa, rather than a means of separating them and causing havoc and destruction. Speaking at the signing ceremony of a five-year deal between Ghana National Supporters Union (GHANSU) and Globacom, the Company’s Head of New Markets, Mr. Yinka Olafimihan said Globacom was collaborating with national supporters unions to enhance the standard of the game in Africa as well as make it easy for fans to be attracted to the game. “African football fans would soon become a model and reference point in World football” Olafimihan said. Particularly, he said that Globacom’s support for GHANSU was in line with the company’s commitment to promoting football in the continent, as according to him, “Globacom has become synonymous with football development in Africa and as we sponsor national teams, competitions and events, it is also our desire as an international network to see that the fans are empowered to identify with their teams wherever they play in the world”. Addressing a mammoth crowd of Ghanaian football supporters who assembled in Accra for the deal signing ceremony, Olafimihan said, “today, will in the future, be a reference point in the history of football in Ghana and in the business of Globacom. It will be a milestone because this ceremony marks the beginning of a partnership that will set the tone for the future of football in Ghana”, he said. Speaking at the ceremony, Hon. Maxwell Kofi Jumah, Deputy Minister of Local Government showered encomiums on Globacom and wondered why no corporate organization operating in the country saw it fit to sponsor the supporters union until now knowing the attachment of Ghanaians to football in general and their national teams in particular. “Supporters are the icing on the cake which makes the cake attractive. Globacom has recognized this icing and we are happy they did…”
