Evans Aryee of the Tesano Squash Club in Accra disposed off his club mate Dimpson Doodo of his number one spot on the ranking table in Ghana after winning the Movie House Squash Masters Tournament hosted by the 4 Garrison Officers Mess Squash Club over the weekend.

Playing from a strong field of over 40 seasoned squash players across the country, Evans played with so much confidence from the preliminary stage of the event beating all those who came his way by straight sets before finally settling scores with old foe Dimpson Doodo.

Aryee and Dimpson displayed astounding skills and stamina in the final match which was decided after an hour and half of a best of five sets.

Going into the final game on a set apiece, Aryee showed a lot of resilience and great skills, making sure he dealt with all the dangerous shots from his opponent to the admiration of the fans present at the event.

Evans Aryee won the competition for the first time since its inception five years ago. The young enterprising player attributed his win to the hard work he put in the final month preceding the event.

"I put in a lot of hard work, training extra hours all to get me in shape for this tournament”. It was evident that a hard a lot of stamina in the final moments of the final set which gave me the advantage over my club mate”.

Evans Aryee further called on the Ministry of Youth and Sports to turn attention to Squash and help in the development of the game in the country.

“The ministry should also give the game of squash some attention like the other sports including football, boxing and athletics,” he said.

"Now that the game has been included in the All Africa games and other international competitions the Ministry can help us to also participate and lift the flag of Ghana high”. “We have what it takes to take the continent by storm and we need just some push from the authorities,” he added.

Meanwhile, captain of the 4 Garrison Squash Club Lawyer Francis Coffie, is amazed at level of competition from the participants and is encouraging the youth to embrace the game of squash.

“The performance exhibited by the players has been of high quality and is a vast improvement from what we saw last year. I pray the players can keep up with the standard displayed and we promise to organize more tournaments next year to make the game of squash more attractive”.
