The 9th edition of the Ghana Garden and Flower Show has ended in Accra.
The Show, a flagship event of the innovative Ghana Garden and Flower Movement initiated by Strategic Communications Africa Limited (Stratcomm Africa) in 2013, is aimed at promoting benefits of gardens and flowers with regard to income generation, job creation, clean and healthy lifestyles, beautification of the country’s public spaces and homes as well as the promotion of environmental conservation among Ghanaians
This year’s 5-day show was under the theme 9G – “Nine years of Green Living”.
This year’s show included the exhibition, educational and networking activities such as the Ghana Garden and Flower Conference, Nurture to Bloom - a discussion on women nurturing men, Israeli Green Innovation Competition, children’s workshops, as well as fun activities, such as movie night, music night, karaoke night amongst a host of several other activities.
Chief Executive Officer of Strategic Communications Africa Limited (Stratcomm Africa) Madam Esther Cobbah thanked sponsors and partners of the show, as well as exhibitors, for their immense contributions in bringing the show thus far.
She said: “the Ghana Garden and Flower Movement has successfully driven the agenda of promoting a greener, cleaner, healthier, wealthier and more Beautiful Ghana in the past nine years and expects to reach greater heights in the years ahead.”
She added that next year will mark a decade of the Show and looked forward to the whole nation rallying together for the realization of the benefits available from Ghana’s flora and fauna.
Special Guest of Honor and representative of the Governor of the Bank of Ghana, Ms Sandra Thompson, Secretary to the Bank of Ghana, commended Stratcomm Africa and, particularly, it's Chief Executive, for their hard work in organizing a successful event in the midst of the pandemic.
According to her, there was a clearly vibrant atmosphere at the show which she saw as “a great avenue that helps to promote locally made and home-grown products, thereby creating and maintaining sustainability”.
She further indicated that the Bank of Ghana is very interested in the green agenda and has published banking principles to encourage sustainability. She urged the organizers to consider organizing such Shows throughout the country, culminating in the annual Show.
Mr Kwamina Asomaning, Managing Director of Stanbic Bank, lead sponsor of the Ghana Garden and Flower Show, said the bank is excited about the partnership with the Ghana Garden and Flower Movement.
He said, “being green is part and parcel of what we do, and one of the antidotes of global warming is to go green and be more sustainable.” He thus called on other banks to join in supporting the Movement’s initiatives.
Chairperson of the National Commission on Civic Education (NCCE), Madam Josephine Nkrumah, for her part called on Ghanaians to recognize that the Constitution, in the Directive Principles of State Policy, makes it the duty of all Ghanaians to protect and safeguard the environment.
About the Ghana Garden and Flower Movement
The innovative Ghana Garden and Flower Movement was initiated by Strategic Communications Africa Ltd. (Stratcomm Africa) in 2013 as its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) activity.
The Movement seeks to contribute to the realization of the UN Sustainable Development Goals (UNSDGs) through creating awareness among Ghanaians about the commercial, aesthetic, psychological, and health benefits of horticulture and floriculture.
It is now a non-profit organisation with an independent Advisory Board, seeking to celebrate Ghana’s unique flora and fauna, whilst pointing people to the income-generating and job creation opportunities inherent in them.
The Ghana Garden and Flower Show is a flagship activity of the Ghana Garden and Flower Movement, aimed at encouraging the harnessing of our flora and fauna for national development and improved livelihoods.
The Show began in 2013 with 14 exhibitors and 1400 guests. It has grown greatly since, with 140 exhibitors and over 21,000 guests in 2019.
In 2020, in the face of COVID-19 and its restrictions, Stratcomm Africa deployed its communication and event management capabilities to enable the Movement to make history with the first-ever virtual Garden and Flower Show.
