Five persons have been killed and 15 houses torched in the latest clashes in the Kasena Nankana towns of Kandiga and Doba.
The clashes were as a result of a renewed land dispute between the people of Kandiga and Doba.
The recent clash occurred when the people of Doba attacked the people of Kandiga because they were jubilating over the release of some suspects who were arrested following an earlier skirmish.
As a result of the renewed clashes, Interior Minister had imposed a 12-hour curfew on the two communities; from 6 pm to 6 am.
Upper East Regional Minister Paulina Patience Tangoba Abayage says those who triggered the conflict have been prosecuted.
“We had skirmishes on Saturday and lives were lost. I’m aware some 5 lives and about 15 houses were burnt. So on Sunday we had a joint MUSEC and DISEC meeting and on Monday we had REGSEC meeting then we made recommendations to the Minister for Interior to impose a curfew on the community.”
Twenty suspects were arrested following the clash, out of which 12 have been sentenced to a minimum of five months and a maximum of eight months imprisonment for possession of unlawful firearms and rioting.
They are to serve the jail term in the Gambaga prison in the North East Region.
The remaining 8 would be arraigned before court at a later date.
Meanwhile, a joint military-police personnel has been stationed at the feuding communities to restore law and order.
