Forty-nine persons suspected to be involved in the harassment and robbing of traders at the Techiman market were on Friday nabbed in a police cum military swoop at the market.
Quantities of dried leaves suspected to be Indian hemp, daggers, knives and three pair scissors were retrieved from them during the operation.
Seventy-five policemen and 64 soldiers were engaged in the special operation aimed at ridding the market of miscreants.
Deputy Commissioner of Police Seth Oteng, Brong Ahafo Regional Police Commander, briefing newsmen in Sunyani said the police had for some time received intelligence reports about the activities of such miscreants at the market.
He said the modus operandi of the robbers was that they would hide at some areas near the market and then attack, harass and rob unsuspecting traders.
The regional commander said the swoop, sanctioned by the Regional Security Council, “was aimed at bringing sanity into the town”.
DCOP Oteng said the suspects, who were confined at the Regional Police Headquarters, would undergo screening and those found culpable arraigned before court.
He said the police had since received telephone calls from some residents of the town expressing their appreciation for the exercise and gave the assurance that with adequate logistics support the exercise would continue.
