40 disabled women to be empowered

The Women with Disability Development and Advocacy Organization (WODAO) has received financial support from Ghana Somubi Dwumanie to implement a capacity strengthening project in the Volta and Oti Regions.

Under the Ghana Somubi Dwumanie’s Sustainability and Legacy Grants Project, an amount of ¢100,000 has been released to the organization to undertake a project aimed at addressing entrenched socio-cultural stigma and discrimination against women and girls with disabilities, mental health conditions and psychosocial disabilities.

These persons also continue to face intersecting barriers to their rights and participation in the society. This was contained in a press release signed by the President of WODAO, Veronica Denyo Kofiedu.

40 selected women with disabilities from the Ho Municipality and Ho West District would be trained to be assertive to enable them start advocating for themselves and participate in decision-making processes in their localities.

“They will also be empowered to access social services including the 3% District Assembly Common Fund, earmarked for people with disabilities in their respective districts in an equal basis with their male counterparts”, she said.

The project also covers the building of the institutional capacity of WODAO towards efficient delivery of its mandate.

“As part of this, the administrative and financial systems of the organization will be enhanced, and the leadership skills of the Board and Working Group strengthened, to better provide leadership to the group”, she detailed.

Madam Kofiedu acknowledged the financial support provided by the United Kingdom government through the United Kingdom Aid for the project.

“Finally, we acknowledge the Options’ led Consortium for the grant and technical support for the project, through the Ghana”, she concluded.
