FOUR suspected armed robbers were arrested yesterday, after engaging a police and military patrol team in an exchange of gun fire at dawn near Radio Gold in the Zoti area of Lartebiokorshie, Accra.
They were named as Tunde Abbas, 25, Albert Abbey, 26, Kweku Tetteh, 21, and Kofi Dodoo, 18.
Briefing the Times yesterday, the Accra Regional Police Commander, Deputy Commissioner of Police Oppong Boanuh, said that at about 1 a.m yesterday, two gangs of armed robbers using three vehicles, including a government 'pick-up vehicle with registration number GY 3232 T, attacked residents of Zoti.
He said the suspects snatched vehicles, including a Mercedes Benz saloon car with registration number, GW 1298U.
Mr Boanuh said a military police patrol team led by ASP Daniel Quarcoo, received information about the attacks and proceeded to the scene.
He said the team engaged the robbers in an exchange of fire and succeeded in arresting the four suspects, while one of the robbers, who was identified as Darko, managed to escape. The police have mounted a search for his arrest.
Mr Boanuh said the police also intercepted an Opel Astra taxi with registration number GR 3613 X and a KIA PRIDE taxi cab, with registration number QW 3351 X which were being used by the robbers.
A search of the two taxi cabs revealed four machetes, a pistol, hammer, knife, pair of scissors, an empty cartridge and a mo¬bile phone.
Mr Buanuh commended the Military and Police team, as well as residents, of Lartebiokorshie for their efforts in arresting the suspects.
