Yinson Ghana, in partnership with the Ahanta West Education Directorate in the Western Region, recently hosted the third annual Yinson Reading and Spelling Bee competition. This year’s event, themed "Learn to Read, Read to Learn," underscored the vital role of literacy in shaping young minds.
A total of 95 students, selected from five circuits within the Ahanta West municipality, advanced from preliminary rounds to compete in the grand finale.
In the Junior High School category, these students contended for the prestigious Yinson Educational Scholarship, aimed at supporting outstanding students in their transition to Senior High School.
This year, one male and two female students were awarded scholarships, reflecting Yinson’s commitment to promoting girl-child education. The top students included Priscilla Asare from Arthur Fischer Catholic School, Ruth Kwofie from Kwamekrom Basic School, and Jerad Ansah from Arthur Fischer Basic School.
In addition to the scholarships, each of the 95 participants received a book donated by Yinson Ghana. To further promote a reading culture, Yinson donated 500 books to the Kajebil Library, constructed by Yinson in 2021, to ensure students have access to quality reading materials.
An exciting new addition to this year’s event was the introduction of uniform t-shirts for all participants, fostering unity and team spirit. Nana Ezieku IV, who has presided over the competition for three consecutive years, noted significant improvements in student's reading and spelling skills and expressed gratitude to Yinson for their continued support.
In his speech, the Municipal Director of Education, Mr George Effah, praised Yinson for their dedication to enhancing literacy and education in the municipality.
He emphasised the transformative power of reading, which enriches vocabulary, improves critical thinking, and broadens one’s horizon. Mr Effah congratulated all participants and highlighted the crucial role of teachers and parents in nurturing children’s love for reading.
Yinson's CSR Coordinator, Edward Mensah, echoed these sentiments, stating that literacy is a gateway to knowledge, empowerment, and personal growth. He reaffirmed Yinson's commitment to nurturing young minds and fostering academic excellence.
Yinson supports scholarship recipients throughout their three-year stay in Senior High School by providing trunks, chop boxes, mattresses, provisions, termly stipends, textbooks, exercise books, shoes, and school bags.
The third annual Yinson Reading and Spelling Bee competition celebrated literacy applauded young scholars and embraced the transformative power of education. Yinson Ghana's initiatives continue to build a brighter future, one word, one page, and one student at a time.
