38,000 BECE candidates to be re-admitted to JHS 3

The Ghana Education Service (GES) will readmit all students who failed in the 2019 Basic Education Certification Examination (BECE) in Maths and English examinations in public junior high schools (JHS).

This is a move by government organisation to measure student performance and to improve on the calibre of students junior high schools produce, thus improve on the level of quality students that enter secondary education in the country.

A total of 38,355 out of 517,331 candidates could not progress to the senior secondary level of education because they scored grade nine in Mathematics or English or both.

Director-General of the GES, Professor Kwasi Opoku-Amankwa, in correspondence to all administrators of public JHS said, “all heads of public JHSs are to ensure that all such students who report at the schools are re-admitted and re-registered for the 2020 BECE.”

The letter continued, “Regional directors are kindly requested to supervise their respective district directors to ensure that headteachers and affected students duly comply with the directive.”

All candidates participated in the 2019 BECE entry-level exams were from 16,871 schools and the examination was administered at 1,880 centres.

About 473,728 candidates qualified to progress to secondary school education.
