The Electoral Commission (EC) opened the nomination process from Monday, September 9, to Friday, September 13, 2024, allowing candidates aspiring to contest the upcoming December 7 general elections to file their nominations.

A total of 22 aspirants successfully submitted their forms, while two others await the EC's decision after filing late.

Among the political parties, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has nominated Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia as its candidate.

The opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) is fielding former President John Dramani Mahama.

Other notable candidates include Kofi Akpaloo of the Liberal Party of Ghana (LPG), Christian Kwabena Andrews of the Ghana Union Movement (GUM), and Dr Hassan Ayariga of the All People's Congress (APC).

Other parties who filed are Alhaji Mohammed Frimpong of the National Democratic Party (NDP), Akua Donkor of the Ghana Freedom Party (GFP), and Nana Akosua Frimpongmaa Sarpong Kumankumah of the Convention People's Party (CPP).

Bernard Mornah represents the People's National Convention (PNC), while Dr. Daniel Augustus Lartey represents the Great Consolidated Popular Party (GCPP).

In addition to political party candidates, the election will also see 11 independent candidates, including prominent figures like Alan Kyeremanten, who resigned from the NPP to run independently.

Other independent male candidates are Nana Kwame Bediako, Samuel Appiah Danquah, George Twum Barima, Kofi Koranteng, Desmond Abrefa, Nana Stephens, Elder Paul Perkoh, James Kwasi Oppong, John Kpikpi, and Dr. Sam Ankrah. Janet Asana Nabla is the only female independent candidate.

However, two potential candidates, Dr Nii Amu Darko (independent) and Kofi Asamoah Siaw of the Progressive People’s Party (PPP), who filed their nominations after the 5 pm deadline on Friday, are awaiting the EC’s decision on whether their nominations will be accepted or rejected.

Dr Agnes Ayisha could not submit her nomination forms because she could not secure endorsements from individuals across all districts.

She has since appealed to the Electoral Commission to provide a resolution that would allow her to participate in the elections.

In an interview with JoyNews, Samuel Tettey, the Deputy Chairman of the Electoral Commission in charge of operations, stated that all candidates will be informed of their eligibility to contest in the elections by Monday at the latest.
