Sefwi Bekwai SHS has topped the Zonal Championship B of the 2023 Onga Cook Art contest.

It was a battle between winners from the regional level, including Kumasi Girls' SHS, Bongo SHS, Techiman SHS, Fiaseman SHS, and Sefwi Bekwai SHS.

As usual, the competition commenced with theoretical gymnastics to test the oral knowledge of the contestants about home economics.

After that, the competing schools were tasked with preparing a replica of the master chef’s meal, which they had been taught the previous day, accompanied by deserts and condiments.

The challenge was to use creativity to demonstrate their understanding of economy in the kitchen, following the same method as the chef, within an hour.

Explaining the task, the quiz mistress, Lily-Versta Nyarko, said, "They will serve two different dishes of a replica of the master chef’s special cuisine with the same ingredients. That’s why we went to market yesterday, did the shopping, came back, and the chef prepared it, and they saw it."

The chef, who doubles as the judge of the contest, explained how the meal is to be replicated. "I prepared something I call 'The Ghanaman Egg Porch. This is because we’re trying to identify it with the primary Ghanaian colours and a simple egg porch that is featuring methods of cooking an egg."

The need for contestants to replicate the chef’s dish is to prepare them for the industry in situations where a customer might request a duplicate of a meal initially ordered.

At the end of the competition, the champions won with 58 percent, 2 points ahead of Bongo SHS, who emerged second with 56 percent. Techiman SHS, Fiaseman SHS, and Kumasi Girls’ SHS emerged third, fourth, and fifth, respectively.

All the contestants received souvenirs from Onga.

Sefwi Bekwai SHS becomes the second school to have sailed through to the finals of the championship to compete with Yaa Asantewaa Girls’ SHS and other yet-to-be-pronounced zonal champions.
