The 2023/24 batch of National Service Personnel at CalBank has completed a renovation and expansion of a 6-unit classroom block at Nii Sowa Dinn Basic School, located in Ashaley Botwe, Greater Accra.
This initiative has provided a lifeline to the school, which had been grappling with severe infrastructure challenges.
Before the project, only four out of the six classrooms were functional, while the other two were barely standing on a proper foundation.
Recognizing the urgent need for intervention, the CalBank National Service Personnel took it upon themselves to lead the transformation.
With teamwork and determination, they pooled resources, relying heavily on their monthly allowances to fund the project.
The team received additional financial support from CalBank, helping them meet the GHS168,792 budget needed to complete the renovation.
Over three months, the service personnel constructed the two unfinished classrooms from scratch, replaced the roof, and installed new windows, doors, and louvre blades.
The entire building was also plastered and repainted, creating a brighter, safer, and more conducive learning environment for the school’s students, who range from Class 1 to Class 6.
Kelvin Yeboah, president of the 2023/24 National Service Personnel at CalBank, shared his pride in the team’s accomplishment.
“This project has been close to our hearts from the beginning. Seeing how the students will now have a better, safer space to learn is deeply rewarding. We’re proud to have contributed to something that will have a lasting impact on the community.”
The initiative was also lauded by Andy Appianin Asiedu, Head of People & Culture at CalBank, who emphasised the importance of giving back to local communities.
“At CalBank, we believe in giving back to the communities we serve. Our National Service Personnel have shown great leadership in seeing this project through.
"Their commitment reflects the values we uphold as a bank. We’re incredibly proud of what they’ve achieved,” he said.
This classroom renovation forms part of an annual tradition where each new batch of National Service Personnel at CalBank undertakes a significant community project.
The initiative not only helps improve local infrastructure but also fosters a sense of responsibility and leadership among young professionals.
