The year 2012 begun with an increased Inflation rate of 8.7 percent. The rate which is for January 2012 is one percentage point higher than that of December 2011. This means that the increase in general price level of goods and services in January was higher than that of December 2011. Food inflation in January 2012 was up from the 4.3 recorded in December 2011 to 4.5 whiles the non- food recorded 11.3. The Head of Economic Statistics at the Statistical Service, Ebo Duncan has been throwing more light on this. “It means a for a long time we’ve been seeing double its non-food inflation and single digit for food inflation but since June 2011 you will see that food inflation has been rising. Clothing and footwear contributed about 18% and this also means it contributed a fifth to the increase in the price level in January. Transport came second and we all know the increase in fuel prices. Also are others like the vegetables and tubers which recorded negative inflation” Regional Inflation rate for the month under review ranged from 5.9 percent for the Upper East and West regions to 11.9 percent for the Central region. Greater Accra region recorded a rate of 7.3 percent whilst five regions recorded inflation rates above the national rate of 8.7 percent.
