The police have arrested two Nigerians for importing pirated Video Compact Discs (VCDs) valued at GH¢35,OOO (¢350 million) in the country.
Muntari Issaka, 26, and Ibrahim Idrisa, 26, were nabbed at their Laterbiokorshie residence in Accra by police personnel from the Nima Divisional Police on Tuesday upon a tip-off.
The Divisional Commander, Chief Superintendent Angwubutoge Awuni, who confirmed the incident, said the sus¬pects would be put before court after investigations.
He said his outfit would hand over the VCDs, comprising African, European and American films and music, to the Copyrights Society of Ghana (COSGA) to identify the various artistes whose works had been pirated.
He said some of the VCDs would be used as exhibits at the courts while the remaining ones might be destroyed after investigations.
Chief Superintendent Awuni said the police got a tip-off late on Tuesday that some people were dealing in pirated VCDs.
He said he despatched his men to the area and arrested the suspects in their living room where they kept the fake items.
Chief Superintendent Awuni said after interrogation Muntari and Ibrahim said they brought the VCDs from Togo and insisted that they paid duties on the items.
He said the writings on the VCDs were scanned, which indicated that the VCDs were fake.
Chief Superintendent Awuni said the two had not mentioned any local accomplice, and said investigations were still ongoing.
He expressed worry at the growing incident of piracy in the country, and said the situation affected the fortunes of the already suffering artistes.
He, therefore, urged the public to patronise only approved VCDs in order to support the artistes.
