Two men who attempted to defraud a Sri Lankan lady of $10.3 million in an apparent ‘419’ scheme have been arrested by the Kaneshie Police in Accra.
Richard Okeke, 27, Togolese, and Jonathan James, 29, Nigerian, have allegedly admitted their offence and will soon be put before court.
ASP Joseph Kwame Amoah, Crime Officer, said that three months ago, Okeke posted to the lady, a debit voucher in the name of International Commercial Bank Limited, Accra branch, with a sum of $10.3 million.
ASP Amoah said, Okeke informed the Sri Lankan that her late father, Benedict, a former timber merchant in Ghana had deposited the $10.3 million with the Ghana branch of the ICBL and asked her to come to Ghana for transfer of the money to her.
Subsequently, the lady arrived in the country on July 11, and proceeded the next day to the bank branch at Kaneshie to check on the validity of the voucher.
The bank manager detected it to be fake and alerted the Kaneshie police whose investigations led to the arrest of Okeke and James in a hotel at East Legon.
On interrogation, Okeke and James said that they were waiting at the hotel for the lady for money to process the documents for the money to be cashed.
Okeke allegedly said he got her father’s e-mail address as well as the debit voucher bank’s from the Internet.
