Two policemen, who reportedly shot and killed a chainsaw operator at a forest at Dapa Junction, have been remanded into prison custody by a Ho Magistrate court.
The two, Corporal James Penyi and Constable Felix Fumador, were first interdicted before being arraigned before court on Tuesday, July 3, 2012.
This was revealed by the Volta Regional Police Commander, DCOP Alex Bedie when he met the chiefs and people of Ahamansu in the Kadjebi District of the Volta region.
The Police commander travelled to the town with the Volta Regional Minister, Henry Ford Kamel, Kadjebi District Chief Executive (DCE), Seth Alifui, parliamentary candidate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Kwadwo Gyapong, among others, to commiserate with the bereaved family and appeal for calm.
According to the Police Commander, on Monday, 25th June, two policemen of the Pampawia Police station and stationed at the Ahamansu Junction went to eat at a chop bar at Dapaa Junction.
At the chop bar, the sound of a chainsaw in a nearby forest attracted the attention of the police personnel.
When they arrived at the spot they met three men cutting a timber and confronted them. One of them whose name was given as Tanko Ibrahim claimed ownership of the tree and the employer of the other two.
The policemen asked them to stop work and hand over the machine, but the chainsaw operator, Kwame Anane, 25, sparked the machine and approached the policemen.
The corporal, James Penyi then collected the AK 47 rifle from Constable Felix Fumador and shot Anane in the forehead killing him instantly.
Tanko and the other operator then raised an alarm which attracted a crowd that subjected the policemen to severe beatings. In the process a civilian, Dawuda Idrisu collected the gun and sent it to the Kadjebi Police and reported the case.
The policemen reportedly fled the scene for their lives leaving behind their motorbike.
The bike was burnt by the mob and the youth and residents in the catchment area, particularly Ahamanso where the deceased hailed vowed to wage a war on the police.
It would be recalled that an earlier report claimed that in the course of negotiation, the trigger of the gun went off and killed the chainsaw operator.
More so the policemen, for fear of their lives, fled the scene living behind their gun which was picked by a resident and taken to the police station at Kadjebi who was rather detained.
The two policemen were admitted at the hospital for treatment before being arraigned while the corpse was deposited at the Police Hospital Morgue awaiting autopsy.
The Regional Commander assured the bereaved family and people of Ahamamsu that investigations would be intensified to promote peace in the area.
The Volta Regional Minister, Henry Ford Kamel called for calm and appealed to the youth to rescind their decision to wage war on the Police since two wrongs do not make a right.
He expressed the gratitude of the President to the bereaved family and assured them of government’s commitment to ensure the right thing. They donated some money to the widow and the bereaved family.
The Regent of Ahamansu, Nana Ofori Afrim II thanked the Regional Minister and the Police for their quick response and urged them to quicken the investigation in order to facilitate the burial of the deceased. Kwame Anane left behind a widow and two children.
