Hundreds of people from all walks of life and in all age categories have registered to participate in this year’s Olympic Day Run to be held in the Sekondi-Takoradi metropolis on Saturday.

Six best participants, three each in the categories of male and female would be given prizes in the event that would cover ten kilometres. The programme is sponsored by the Ghana Olympic Committee and Coca-Cola Ghana Limited.

Prizes would be awarded to five others in the category of the oldest man, the oldest woman, the youngest boy, the youngest girl and the best physically challenged who manages to complete the distance.

Mr. P. N Akowuah, Western Regional Sports Development Officer told the GNA Sports in Takoradi on Monday that other participants would be given ‘T’ shirts as souvenir.

There would be free medical examination for all participants before the event that would begin at the Jubilee Park in Takoradi and end at the Gyandu Park in Sekondi.

The Olympic Day Run was first organised in 1948 by the Internal Olympic Committee to encourage National Olympic Committees to commemorate and celebrate Olympic Day and is open to all categories of people from all walks of life regardless of their athletic ability.

One of the major objectives of the Run is to promote mass participation in sports to advance the health of participants, uphold the Olympic values, enhance socialization and create fun amongst the people.

Mr Akowuah urged more people to register and participate in the event and mentioned the Gyandu Park, EFF-ESS Pharmacy and various Keep Fit Clubs in the Metropolis as registration centres.
