Two teenaged armed robbers were yesterday arrested by residents of an Accra Newtown neighbourhood when they attacked a nursing mother in her room in broad daylight.

The two, Emmanuel Nego, 18, and Solomon Tetteh, also 18, whose faces were hooded, descended on the lactating housewife and a struggle ensued.

Ignoring the pistol which turned out to be a toy one and a knife, the housewife put up a good fight as her 7-month-old baby whose mouth had been glued up by the robbers struggled in her restrained condition.

Eventually neighbours came to the rescue of the woman and the youthful robbers were overpowered and handed over to the neighbourhood watchdog committee who delivered them to the Nima Police unharmed.

One of the robbers, Solomon Tetteh claimed to be a student of the Nkrumah Kokomlemle School.

It was discovered that Emmanuel Nego is a nephew of the husband of the woman they had attacked.

He was said to have been brought from the village by his uncle, so his conduct surprised many who know his relationship with the victim.

The Nima Police Divisional Commander, Chief Superintendent Awuni Angwubutoge, in his remarks expressed delight that it appears members of the public are beginning to realize that it is improper to lynch suspected armed robbers.

“People should avoid taking the law into their own hands by lynching suspects. They should rather hand them over to the Police for the necessary action,” he said.

In another development, the Nima Police yesterday handed over two suspected armed robbers who were nabbed last week after their weapons were uncovered in a neighbourhood kiosk, to their Kumasi counterparts.

The suspects were driven away in a Black Maria dispatched from the Ashanti Regional capital.

They are wanted by the Kumasi Police for a number of robberies in the city and other places like Nkawkaw.

There has been an increase in the spate of armed robbery of late, a situation which has engaged the attention of government.

DAILY GUIDE has learnt that night Police/Military patrol is being intensified with a view to curtailing the crime.
