The alertness of a taxi driver, Kofi Kanema, has led to the arrest of two suspected armed robbers.

Kanema picked Jonas Aidoo, 19, a porter, and Eric Addy, 24, a taxi driver, at the Kwame Nkrumah Circle on Thursday at about 11.30 p.m. to Mamprobi, a suburb of Accra.

The two sat in back seat of the car. Kanema told the police that his curiosity was aroused when he saw through the driving mirror, Aidoo fidgeting all the time, adjusting his sitting position, shifting here and there.

On closer look, he realised that Aidoo had a cutlass concealed on him. Although gripped by fear, he kept mute until he got to a police check point.

Briefing the Times on Friday, the Accra Regional Police Commander, Deputy Commissioner of Police Kwaku Opare-Addo, reported Kanema as saying that on seeing the concealed cutlass, he drove his taxi towards a check point at the junction of the Awodume cemetery which was manned by the military and police.

Unknown to the two suspects, the driver reported what he had seen to the security personnel who quickly searched the taxi and its occupants.

The search revealed the sharp cutlass on Aidoo.

On interrogation, Aidoo said that Addy gave it to him and that they intended to use it to snatch the taxi cab.

The two suspects have been remanded in prison custody for further investigation.
