Eighteen suspected criminals were on Wednesday arrested at three locations in Accra in a special operation carried out by the Dansoman Police.
The locations were Dansoman Exhibition, Zamrama Line and Odorkor.
At Zamrama Line, members of the operation team, led by the Dansoman District Police Commander, Superintendent Alex Yartey-Tawiah, apprehended two suspected armed robbers, Nuredeen Mohammed, 20, and Eric Nketiah, 19, at their hideout around 1.00 p.m.
Briefing the Daily Graphic, Supt. Yartey-Tawiah said Nuredeen was believed to have led most of the armed robbery cases in the Accra metropolis.
He said Nuredeen, who was wearing three big talismans at the time of his arrest and chanted some incantations, put up a fierce resistance but the police managed to overpower him.
Supt. Yartey-Tawiah stated that when Nuredeen was searched, a tomahawk, a sharp machete and a big unregistered motorbike believed to be used for street robberies were found on his premises.
He said investigations were going on, after which the two suspects would be sent to the Regional Police Headquarters for an identification parade and further investigations.
Supt. Yartey-Tawiah stated that the police also arrested two persons, namely, Lincoln Becom, 24, and Ibrahim Haruna, 30, at a house at Dansoman Exhibition where some Nigerians had been converging to allegedly carry out illegal activities.
He said some of them were also suspected to be engaged in armed robberies.
The district commander stated that based on a tip-off, the police, armed with an emergency search warrant, mounted a swoop on the house, during which the two suspects were arrested.
He said various items, including Internet gadgets and a Toyota Carina saloon car , with registration number GW 762 KX, were impounded and sent to the Dansoman Police Station.
Supt. Yartey-Tawiah said the ringleader, whose name was being withheld for security reasons, was on the run and frantic efforts were being made for his arrest.
He said at Odorkor, a murder suspect, Emmanuel Asare, led the police team to a den of criminals to arrest his accomplice and the receiver of some stolen items, in the course of which the team came across a group of Indian hemp (wee) smokers around 2.00 p.m.
The district commander stated that on seeing the police, the suspected criminals took to their heels, with some of them scaling walls, but the police managed to arrest 10 of them.
He said the accomplice of the murder could not, however, be arrested as he fled.
Supt. Yartey-Tawiah stated that the suspects would be screened and those found culpable prosecuted.
